Welcome to the first edition of The Ink Express. Printer Ink Express will publish this newsletter on a monthly basis and hopes to include information for business people on not only printers and their supplies but many other aspects of business and the marketplace.

A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow and asked him "Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?" The crow answered: "Sure, why not?" So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested a long time. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate him.

Q: What can we learn from this?

A: To be sitting and doing nothing all day long, you must be sitting very high up!

We Recommend Brother Inkjet Printers

For the last 2 years we have been recommending Brother Inkjet Printers too all our customers. There are  few reasons for this.

First Brother has always used seperate ink cartridges for the four prime colours: CYMK or Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, and Black. This is important as it allows you the end user to use all the ink you paid for. Many HP, Canon, and Lexmark printers have one black cartridge and then one colour cartridge. The colour cartridge contains all three colours; Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. This means if you are printing a lot of pages that have blue in it the cartridge will run out of Cyan with still lots of the other colours in the cartridge. Since you are out of Cyan you need to change the ink cartridge and all the yellow and magenta ink you paid for goes into the trash.

The second reason is that we can sell a compatible ink cartridge with virtually  no failures. As the Brother cartridges do not contain a print head the cost is low and the brand new generic cartridges work great.

The third reason is that Brother is the only major manufacturer that has not placed obstacles in the way of the generic/compatible manufacturer. There are no lock out chips or other electronic protection placed on their cartridges so there is less that can go wrong.

CRM

Recently our company was looking for a CRM solution. CRM is an acronym for Customer Relations Manager and it is software that allows you to track your customers and all aspects of contact you have with them. There are many software packages available including ACT, Goldmine, Maximiser and many others. We choose a CRM called Sugar.

What is a CRM?

Sugar allows us to track all of our customer’s information. Each sales representative is responsible for keeping their prospects and customer files up to date. It allows us to track the full sales cycle and to plan for the future.

We also use it for marketing purposes and for tracking the efforts of our sales team. This newsletter is generated and sent using Sugar.

Why Sugar?

Sugar is a CRM that is an Open Source piece of software. This means that anyone can add or make changes to the system. This leads to custom solutions for companies that do not fit the standard box solutions offered by Act, Goldmine, Maximiser and the other standard solutions.

The other reason we choose Sugar is that it can easily integrate with our website which was programmed using Joomla which is another Open Source piece of software. We have not taken advantage of this aspect yet as we are still tweaking Sugar to meet all our needs.
